If you’re like many parents are tired, you may be tempted to try some things, hoping to find the Holy Grail parents: more sleep!
Perhaps you’ve heard that adding things to a bottle of formula or breast milk could get extra sleep.
However, there are many things, as our grandmothers did, but we just know better now.
Perhaps you are struggling with baby constipation or irritable, and have heard conflicting advice about what might help.
Many old and Fussing constipation remedies include adding stuff to feed the baby.
The major health organizations recommend for children exclusively breastfed for the first six months and then for nursing to continue the next suitable solid food for at least a year.
The exclusive breastfeeding means that an infant gets only breast milk, other liquids or solids are given.
However, some parents put different things in their baby’s bottle. They may have been told that these things are, or even cure, remedies for various conditions such as colic, wind, constipation, sleep, etc
Many of these things have been handed down from generation to generation.
Is there any scientific evidence to support the use of many of these things?
Could they potentially do damage?
Why we don’t need to add anything for bottles
Evidence continues to emerge about how bacteria in our intestines affect our health. It seems that a gut microbiome elastic is important for our health. An elastic gut microbiome is one that is more diverse and less likely to move in the direction of the unhealthy bacteria.
What happens in our early years may have the greatest impact on the development of our gut microbiome. This is because in the early stages of the gut microbiome can easily be changed. But as the baby grows, gut microbiome loses plasticity, and so it will be more resistant to change
There are many factors that determine the development of the gut microbiome of a child. One of these factors is how a child is born.
The exclusive breastfeeding contributes to a child’s development of a healthy gut microbiome. For example, there are significant differences in bacteria in intestines of children who are breastfed than formula-fed babies. Breast milk is the perfect blend of Probiotics and Prebiotics to help a child to develop a healthy gut microbiome. 1: Gripe Water
You may have heard the use of gripe water as a way to try to reduce the wind in a child. While some parents may think that it is useful, there is no scientific evidence to support its use.
It may not be familiar, but the appeal of water contains about 4% alcohol. It is possible that the expected benefits of this may be in part due to sleep-inducing properties of alcohol.
If something is given to a child for non-medical reasons is done to induce sleep in an unnatural way, it can potentially cause damage. For example, sleep longer/deeper may increase the risk of a child to SIDS.
Sometimes, the signs of a “wind” or “gas” shows for children may be due to the ghost hour or colic.
2: corn syrup
If your child suffers from constipation can be very difficult to look at their discomfort. While seeking advice, you might have heard about the use of corn syrup to help treat constipation in children. After all, it is an old remedy that has been used commonly.
But the use of corn syrup to treat constipation in children is not recommended and can be dangerous, as it can cause botulism.
Some people think it is necessary to give children water in hot weather or wet, or for additional hydration.
The water is not necessary for a child exclusively breastfed even on the hottest days or damp.
In some circumstances, the formula fed babies may need more water. It is important to be guided by your healthcare provider, as it provides water to a small child can be potentially dangerous.
You may have heard about using Infacol to treat excessive wind and colic in infants. But its use is justified?
The active substance of Infacol is simethicone. A 2014 review showed that in the case of simethicone to treat colicky “more randomized controlled trials have noticed any difference in reducing colic episodes compared to placebo.”
There are reasons why Infacol could be harmful? Yes, maybe.
Among a list of other ingredients of Infacol, there are methylhydroxybenzoat and propylhydroxybenzoat. These ingredients can cause allergic reactions. They are also paraben, which is considered by some to be potentially dangerous.
Some parents may have been consulted on the use of thickeners for the treatment of reflux. The idea is that by making feeding heavier would tend to remain in the abdomen, rather than the increase in the new esophagus.
