Parenting after 50 years: No One is Surprised Anymore
Thirty years ago, being a father or mother at an advanced age seemed to us to be the strangest. The cases were exceptional and went to know one the stories that were behind. However, today the parenting after 50 years is becoming more and more common. No one is surprised anymore.
Without going any further, this same week two cases have been made public in Galicia: the president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo and his wife who will be parents time, he is 55, and she is 51 years.
A possible dream, still past the 50
With 20 years a woman has a 25% chance of becoming pregnant if she maintains relationships on her productive days. With 30 years, the odds fall to 15%. From the 35 descend to 8% and 3% from the 38 years. That is that from the 40 years the odds are very remote by natural way.
But there is science to help. Assisted reproduction is a great ally of women who want to be mother past the barrier of 40 and even 50 years when the biological clock has already stopped.
The donation of eggs and the progress experienced in the last years in the different techniques of reproduction allow fulfilling the late sleep more and more couples.
It not only influences the biological factor. Today, social circumstances are not the same as thirty years ago. Today couples are looking for relative economic stability before they have children, something that in our society today is becoming more and more delayed.
Both men and women seek to be strong in their careers and have a stable life before getting on the boat of fatherhood.
No Age Restrictions; Mother-Grandmother
The Spanish Fertility Society discourages pregnancies after 50 years because of the high risk it poses to both the mother and the baby. In Spain, however, the act of assisted reproduction does not impose any restrictions so that women can be mothers at their age.
Most gynecologists do not agree to submit fertility treatments to women after 50 years, but because there is no law to prohibit it, everyone assumes their risks. If the mother’s health is good, there are no pre-existing illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension and medical tests are favorable, there are doctors who agree to try a treatment.
The risks are high. There is a very high probability of chromosomal failure in the fetus or of having an abortion or premature delivery. For the mother, of having complications in the pregnancy or [a stroke] (as women who become pregnant at 40 years or later will have a greater chance of having a stroke or heart attack)
And not only the risks of a late pregnancy are caused by the mother, but also the father’s age has much to do with it. Being elderly parents increases the risk of congenital anomalies and is more likely to be associated with the child’s mental health.
On the other hand, more and more studies link the advanced age with certain advantages for the children like that to be parents of advanced age favors that the children are more long-lived
The best biological age to be a mother is the 25 years in the woman, but for many to be parents after the 50 is a new opportunity. They live a more relaxed paternity; more mature and enjoy much more of the children.
Selfishness or dream fulfilled?
The main arguments against late parenthood are that, logically, assuming that parents will die of old age, the children are left without parents before those who have younger parents. They’re taking time out of their lives with their parents. They are probably not or will be much older when their children graduate when they get married or have children. Maybe they don’t get to know their grandchildren also the lack of vitality to care for young children.
Going all day behind a baby is very tired and obviously, the energy you have at 20 years is not the same as you have at 50 or 60 years.
On the other hand, those who have been parents at an advanced age agree that there is a more peaceful and mature paternity that results in the benefit of children.
For many couples who have not been able to be parents before, being past the 50 is a fulfilled dream, a gold brooch for his already established life.
Cases of famous parents after 50
The world of celebrities is plagued by mature fathers and mothers. A few months ago Janet Jackson announced her first pregnancy with 49 years and will be mother fulfilled and the 50.
Although he has three adopted older children, George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, had his first biological daughter at 69 years.
Robert De Niro became a father for the sixth time in 68 years, through surrogacy. Paul McCartney, a father of eight children, had the last, a girl when she was 61 years old.
The trend is higher in men. Although the biological clock also advances for them, it is of course not the same as for women. Donald Trump, Tommy Mottola, and Michael Douglas also join the mature Dads Club.
Finally, the King of Rock is also the king of late parenthood. Mick Jagger will be a 73-year-old father with his fifth wife, a 29-year-old model. He has a granddaughter that will be greater than his eighth child.
